Genuine Horsebutt Strops
Genuine Horsebutt Strops
I have been collecting strops for a number of years, and all them in the best condition were made of horse butt. Because of its dense nature, it prevents rounding the cutting edge that happens with softer leathers.
There are three versions of this strop.
A mounted version, 16” overall length, 3" wide, with 15” of horsebutt. There are two pieces of leather mounted, one flesh side, and one hairside. I like to use the .5 micron chromium oxide honing compound ( a little baby or mineral oil helps smooth it out) on the flesh side, then perform a final stropping on the naked hair side. 7-9 oz. thick.
Unmounted, a 15″ x 3″ strip. Many people like to use the flesh side with the compound, and the hair side naked for a final strop. If you don’t mind using it unmounted, you can use both sides.
Unmounted, a 12″ x 2″ strip. Many people like to use the flesh side with the compound, and the hair side naked for a final strop.
